The Cubs 40 man's not all that crunchy after all
The Cubs looming roster decisions don't look all that tough
With the Cubs playing out the string while filling injury holes with such immortals as Esteban Quiroz and Jared Young, we are constantly reminded that they’d call up better prospects but they face a truly difficult 40 man roster crunch this offseason.
That’s why Matt Mervis is mashing dingers in Iowa and flashing this pancake skillet defensive hands for the good fans of the International League instead of at Wrigley Field. Mervis doesn’t need to be protected on the 40 man this winter, so why add him just to have him play a few meaningless September games when Young can live out his dreams of making a lot of outs in big league stadiums?
Let’s take a look at the 40 man and see just how crunchy things really are.
You don’t have to do anything with the free agents, so Willson Contreras, Drew Smyly or Wade Miley don’t need to be accounted for unless you sign them before the Rule V roster deadline, and I’m pretty sure the Cubs aren’t planning on it.
