Thank you for the link to Harry. You are so right, with the passage of time and the endless banal and unfunny caricatures of Dempster and others, I had forgotten what a really great baseball broadcaster Harry was! He was entertaining, sure, but in fact, he was clear, concise and really authoritative!

Ryno was always my second favorite Cub of that era behind Dawson, because Andre would do awesome stuff while Ryno was just so consistently good that you took it for granted. And it's amazing how few times he struck out considering he always took the first pitch so he was usually in a 0-1 hole.

A couple weeks ago when the Cubs played in Tampa I had to watch the games on TV because I was in the MLB blackout area. Hearing Staats call Cub games felt like a home cooked meal.

I enjoyed Shawon talking about how Ryne would miss badly on a curveball early in a game to get one later that he would hit. It's a great story, one that we heard earlier in the week about Willie Mays. The only problem is that Ryne never could hit a curveball, another thing that made his success all the more impressive.
