Great introspective. Loved this column almost as much as The Immortals!

The other thing Joe did in 2016 that cannot be overstated is in G3 of the NLDS, he gave the ball to Mike Montgomery & told him it was his game from here on out while Bochy blew through his bullpen, which left them tired for G4, when the Cubs pounced.

Finally. This is the most insightful and intelligent (and yes, supported by correct recollection and detail) reflection on why Joe Maddon succeeded, and why the 2016 Cubs won the World Series. I could not be more grateful to the author for putting it out there, since we’ve had to listen to ridiculously shallow and frankly stupid attacks on Maddon since literally the day after the Series. Cub fans were fortunate to have a manager from 2015-2019 who paid his dues, learned his lessons, and applied them to OUR team for once. Thank God it all happened, and thank God for people who are willing to take the time to think deeply and set the record straight.

Well said, Andy. Plus, without Joe, we wouldn't have gained the one team motto that was perfect for a perfect time: "Do not suck"

Perfect Andy. He is the greatest we have ever had and if we had a just a small amount of common sense we would bring him back in any capacity. Not a bad idea either as to the Joe square analogy. Bottom line they are both great baseball men and we need to park the egos and the front office incompetency and do something here that could turn this organization around.

Great column, Andy (as always)! It reminded me about how much fun the 2015 Cubs were, that Jonathan Herrera was on the team, and that he had this “hands-hat” thing. What a team!
